![]() ![]() Name: Karlesta Class: High Priestess [Goddess Worship] [Promoted from Sister] Weapons: Staves [C] Country: Atsiria Age: Birthday: July 25, 609 Zodiac: Leo Blood Type: A+ Family: Mother [Deceased] // Father [Deceased] // Sister, Dairanne Languages Known: Trade [A], Atsirian [A] ![]() Karlesta was born into a middle class family, living an average life in the Atsirian city Feldri. Her father -- a quiet, mousey man -- worked for modest wages as clerk to a wealthy merchant, while her mother -- a haughty, confident woman -- worked her way into the household of House Vilos as a scribe, for better pay and higher prestige. Though her mother was without a doubt the breadwinner of the family, her father showed little resentment (at least where Karlesta ever saw) and supported his wife wholeheartedly, content to serve as supplemental funds and happy with his work (despite his wife's constant badgering for advancement.) Though her mother often seemed to look down upon her father, taking on haughty tones and unapologetically giving orders, Karlesta's family life was for the most part happy; her father accepted things as they were and made no complaint, and they lived comfortably enough. With two working parents, Karlesta and her younger sister, Dairanne, were often left with sitters and nannies -- all women, and typically her mother's friends, or their daughters, each sporting some measure of their mother's personality, particularly concerning the proper place of men. While Dairanne rarely listened to their stories and opinions, openly given amidst haughty chuckles and shaking heads, content instead to busy herself playing with their sitters' sons, instead (a practice Karlesta found quite revolting), Karlesta herself listened raptly and with utmost attention, drinking in their words and swallowing without a second thought. Raised with these prejudices constantly in mind, Karlesta's friends growing up were always women, and as her sister's fondness for the company of boys became more apparent over the years, the sisters drifted apart by necessity. Karlesta became somewhat known for her volatile personality; prone to lashing out without warning, her sister and her male friends became prime targets -- and though Dairanne always seemed forgiving (if saddened), her male friends were not, and ensuing rumours ensured boys mostly left her alone, which was, as she insisted, just the way she liked it. Her life was utterly shattered without warning when her father took ill; "some foreign disease," they whispered, shaking their heads and wringing their hands, and though she and her sister were kept well away from him, their mother immediately quit her other obligations to see to his needs, and was soon infected, herself. Cut off from both parents this way, frightened and confused, Karlesta continued to withdraw further and further into herself, lashing out more fiercely than ever before, right up until the morning a kind faced nurse with graying hair informed them in subdued tones of their parents' deaths. For a time after this, Karlesta and Dairanne lived together in one of Feldri's orphanages, left with nothing but each other and memories that are still too painful for either to think on for long. As with all things, the sisters approached this hardship much differently; Karlesta looked down upon everyone and hid her pain behind a barrier of self importance and smoldering anger, while Dairanne was quite open about her feelings and loss, making friends among the other orphans, accepting their support and returning their friendship. Karlesta quite resents her sister for this, and doesn't bother to hide it from her or her many friends. After years of living this way, outcast seemingly be choice, Karlesta began to take a new interest -- the rumours of the Prophet of the Goddesses reached Feldri as Melyndra made her way across the country, converting droves of new faithful wherever she went. When she finally stopped in Feldri itself, Karlesta fled the orphanage, setting fire to her room and escaping through a window. She began to harbor the beginnings of an obsession over Melyndra and her Goddesses, seeing the stern face of her mother reflected in the woman's striking, startling features. A series of adventures within the city unfolded, while Karlesta attempted to keep hidden from those who would return her to the orphanage; eventually, after Melyndra departed the city, Karlesta decided she should do the same. She stole a number of items from a senile woman who had given her sanctuary, mistaking her for her long-dead daughter, a strange, rune-etched artifact she felt mysteriously drawn to among them. Thus outfitted, she struck out into the dunes around Feldri, confident and sure. Three days later, the Prophet found her near-dead on the sand, drawn to her through the inexplicable power of the talisman she'd found. She unofficially adopted Karlesta, intending to use her for reasons unknown, though undoubtedly relating to the power that called to her across the desert to begin with. Together they traveled to the city of Razen, where they exposed the murderer of the King of Atsiria several years prior, freeing Lord Lawrence, who had been falsely accused in his place. Calling him the "Chosen One," they offered to lead him to the next piece of his puzzle... Thus, at the head of Lord Lawrence's odd procession, she and Melyndra led them to the city of Cleraine, the proud once-capital of Atsiria. There, Karlesta worked to convert the city -- including Lady Daerielle and Lady Arsele, members of the prestigious House Atsir. She soon considered them friends, along with Lord Joseph, their mild-mannered and pleasant eldest brother. Unfortunately, events in Cleraine would unfold in such a way as to result in the deaths of all present members of House Atsir, barring Lord Joseph, and including Lady Laeleena herself. Following this, Melyndra led Karlesta, Lord Lawrence, and a small hand-picked procession through the desert to find a lost and ancient cavern, within which it was revealed at last that the bejeweled and dazzling mural Melyndra had based the Goddesses on depicted three of the Kilian clerics, in truth -- Ethniu, Danu, and Ness. Karlesta's faith was thus tested here, though with Melyndra's encouragement, she resolved to hold to her belief in the Goddesses, and continue to accompany the Prophet in her mission as her adopted daughter. ![]() Karlesta is haughty and cold, giving off an aura of self importance wherever she goes. Her walls are seemingly unscalable; she is barely civil to the other girls of the orphanage, never calling any friend or seeking their company on her own volition. To the boys, she is insufferable, looking shamelessly down upon them and using only patronizing tones when forced to consort with them... actions that have all around made her into an outcast among the orphans. She is the object of jeers and insults, most behind her back, some more outright, and while she makes a show of throwing off their jibes, countering it with ever colder and ever more tightly constructed walls, she is at heart simply a scared, confused little girl who only wants her mother, her father, to go home. She longs for companionship, though she'd never let anyone who knows her now see. She both bitterly envies and utterly loathes her sister's approach to their new life, though she can't stand the thought of losing her, as well... and unable to express any of these feelings, lashes out at her more often than ever before. ![]() Karlesta sports short reddish-brown hair, green eyes, a thin frame, and stands at average height at 5'3". Her clothing is simple and plain, as one might expect that of an orphan to be, though at home she enjoyed fine dresses and the spoils her mother granted her. Though in public she is rarely seen without a scowl, alone she is very melancholy and long faced, though she does her best to never cry. Her smiles now are few, far between, melancholy and shown only when she is sure she is alone, lost in the memories of her old life. ![]() ![]() ![]() [Her PB is Sakura, from Tsubasa.] |
